Insights into the creative processes of a Mindful Illustrator and Modern Doodler
Dark Mandalas V5 is taking its own sweet time (like its predecessors).
Ever wonder why some coloring books take longer to create than others? Here's a behind-the-scenes look at why Dark Mandalas Volume 5 is one of the most challenging and time-consuming projects on my drawing board.
Medium Mandalas Volume 6 is here, which makes the series complete.
The story of my mandala drawing journey in those early days is that I launched my first book, Mindful Mandalas Volume One, with a lot of excitement and no real trajectory. I launched Minute Mandalas soon after with a target audience of kiddos. It wasn't long before I realized there needed to be some middle ground. And so Medium Mandalas was born.
I accidentally became a coloring book artist
I never planned to become a coloring book artist. What started as doodling on a tablet while stuck in bed eventually grew into a catalog of more than 150 books, one drawing at a time.
Digital Stickers now have PDF files
Good news for digital planner and notebook users. All of my digital sticker packs now include organized PDF files alongside the original transparent PNG stickers.
Ten solid coloring rules.
Do coloring books have rules? I've heard heaps of suggestions over the years, but I think the best approach is the one that makes you happy.
I have a lot of unfinished projects
Do you have unfinished creative projects? So do I. I've stopped feeling guilty about having multiple books, ideas, and works-in-progress happening at the same time.
10 tips to elevate your coloring experience
Whether you're a seasoned artist or just dipping your toes into the world of adult coloring, we've got some tips to take your coloring game to the next level. Here are 10 handy tricks to enhance your coloring experience:
I didn't expect this book to sell
Some of my books were created for myself, my friends, or my family. I decide I want a specific book to exist, so I create it. And hey, why not leave it up on Amazon and see what happens?
I don't sketch first.
I think part of the reason I'm fast is that I don't sketch out my plans for mandalas and doodles. I start with one or two shapes. Usually I'm trying for something unique. Then I look for interesting ways to connect those shapes and fill the space around and inside them.
I don't draw (or color) scenes. Wanna know why?
I have drawn a few scene pages. One was for a coloring contest and two were for a friend. They take a lot of planning and execution time. There can be several iterations before I reach that magical "done" moment.
And that moment? That's where the dopamine is.
Did you know I'm giving away a whole book?
It's June 2, which means Pride Month is officially underway. I'm giving you a whole book to celebrate.
Why I keep drawing mandalas.
I discovered drawing mandalas completely by accident. Years later, they are still my favorite things to draw and color.
My journals were sadly empty, and here's why.
I love journals. Writing in them? That's a different story. If you've ever bought a beautiful journal only to leave it mostly blank, you're not alone. Here's why it happens, and how I accidentally designed a journal that works better for brains like mine.
Mandala Mashups make mindfulness mesmerizing.
I started drawing mandalas by accident. I was discovering the tools in IBISPaint and found the symmetry tool. I started doodling, and the results were... well, history was made. So it makes sense to me that I would also accidentally stumble onto other great art ideas. Mandala Mashups was just such a happy accident.
The Open Me Anywhere Journal.
I love journals. Love them. I think I have at least 12 hardcover journals on my shelf. I love paper. And I love the idea of preserving stories and memories forever. But I'm also pretty demand avoidant. I don't like being told what to do, even by a book. And so most of the journals on my shelf remain unwritten in. My brain started working on this problem.
Sailing the seas of Ocean Blue.
With its calming and soothing vibes, this serene shade evokes the peacefulness of a day spent by the water.
Parenting-coded funny shirts.
Parenting is one of the most wonderful and confusing things I've ever done. Through the mess, the chaos, and the unexpected, there has always been deep love.
Chronically Ill and Chill: a bold coloring book capturing chronic illness icons.
If you are chronically ill, you may find yourself donning your fuzzy socks and headphones to hide away under a blanket. Or maybe you’re cozied up in a bean bag chair with your journal and your electrolytes nearby.
Parent’s Days. Who’s with me?
Parenting can be exhausting, chaotic, hilarious, rewarding, frustrating, joyful, tender, and deeply loving, sometimes all in the same day. Those are the themes I want to honour year-round, whether through art, coloring books, shirts, or a cheeky mug that makes another tired parent laugh.
Did you miss Trip Hop?
So the scene is 4 pm on a cold wet November night, downtown in busy Vancouver. There's Santa across the street blasting carols. The busses drown out most of the music, but what can be heard is the lush downbeats and crooning vocals of Beth Gibbons.
